Thank you for taking the time to comment on my blog post. I agree that the process is inherently exclusive and selective therefore there will always be students who look for ways to go around the system. What I'd like to see is a greater societal emphasis on the vast number of quality higher education institutions so that students don't feel that there are only 25 schools in the country that are worth attending.

I feel badly for all of the honest, hard working students of Great Neck. Honestly this story could have happened anywhere and probably does happen regularly in other places. I don't begin to think that this was an isolated incident.

I don't know that you're ever going to be able to create an atmosphere that, by its nature, is exclusive, without people trying to circumvent it. Until every kid can go to whatever school he or she chooses (never), there will be a small minority that try to gain access dishonestly. SAT cheating is just one way to do that. Paying someone to write your application essays is another. There are many more.

I don't mean to be dismissive. I lament the amount of stress inherent in the application process, too. But I don't think it's fair to all the honest kids in Great Neck to give too much credence to the atmosphere. MOST kids in that town still get their scores the old-fashioned way -- hard work.

That was really lovely, Lisa. Thanks for the common sense advice. And thanks for reminding me that I should back into yoga.

Did you ever dine at either Dave's Italian Kitchen(which I think is still there) in Evanston(NOrthwestern) or Yesterday's restaurant which I think closed-those were staples at Northwestern. And they were not pricey. Then Bennigans rolled into town and I think there went the neighborhood!

When I was an Ithaca student, I ate at Moosewoods many times, although usually only when Mom and Dad were visiting so they can pick up the check! There was another restaurant right in the "Commons" at the corner that made the BEST french onion soup, and I can not remember the name, anyone out there know what I am talking about?
Great Post Lisa - there is no doubt food goes along with the college years!

Oh, Marie, we do share a brain! And I would be so into a corollary blog about college food. The funniest comment was from Ellie (age 7) who couldn't wait to get to U. Michigan. She kept saying how much she wanted to go on the campus tour. I couldn't believe that she would be that motivated to tour a school. Well, she then went on to tell me that the campus tour involved all of the great shopping on campus. Ha ha! You and Ellie should tour colleges together!

We share a brain. I have long considered doing a blog called "Marie visited some colleges. Here's what she ate and bought." Then I realized that I wouldn't really help myself or my students if I shared my real opinions about the dining and/or shopping near some colleges. Sooo...we should do it together!

I am notorious among my advisees and their parents for planning meals while also planning college tours. Typical conversation: "If you go to Oberlin first thing in the morning, then you can go to the organic burrito place on the other side of the quad for lunch. Be sure to get the chipotle brownie. Then go to Kenyon and have dinner at the Kenyon Inn." There are great, creative and inexpensive meals to be found near almost any college campus. Great post!
